1972 signed “LSchinko” Hand-painted Sgraffito Abstract Bird Motif Pottery Dish

This piece is a hand-painted and incised glazed earthenware dish created by Canadian artist Lorie Schinko. Located in Haliburton Highlands Canada. For this piece she used sgraffito technique where artist scratches through an upper layer of the slip or glaze to reveal the contrasting clay body underneath. The piece is highly stylized, abstract bird motif filled with intricate, geometric patterns. This style is characteristic of Schinko’s work and reflects an influence from various global folk art traditions, including Mexican Tonala pottery and perhaps Mimbres designs.
