Why Bloch Bauers?
(pronounced Block Bowers)
We chose the name Bloch Bauers because their story is more than a piece of art history—it embodies the ideals we hold close. Ferdinand and Adele Bloch-Bauer were not only among Vienna’s wealthiest families but also visionary patrons who understood the power of art to shape culture and inspire generations. Their name carries the weight of freedom reclaimed, peace sought after turmoil, and justice pursued against overwhelming odds. At its heart, their legacy is a story about art: its resilience, its beauty, and its power to connect people across time. By carrying their name, our gallery honors that legacy and reminds every visitor that art is not only to be admired, but also to be defended as a force for truth and humanity.
Who are the Bloch-Bauers?
Bloch Bauers takes its name from Ferdinand and Adele Bloch-Bauer, celebrated Viennese patrons of the arts whose lives became inseparable from Gustav Klimt’s portraits of Adele. Their collection of Klimt masterpieces, amassed through both wealth and deep cultural vision, became world-famous. But during the Second World War, the Nazis seized the family’s art, stripping them not only of priceless works but of their place in cultural history.
Decades later, after relentless legal battles led by their niece Maria Altmann, these stolen paintings were reclaimed. The most iconic, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I—often called The Woman in Gold—was returned after nearly 70 years. Today it stands as both an artistic triumph and a symbol of the long fight for justice.
