Elizabeth Johnson

Elizabeth Johnson is a plein air and studio landscape painter whose work captures the character and quiet strength of Ontario’s northern wilderness. Based near Dorset on the edge of Algonquin Park, she has spent more than three decades painting the lakes, forests and small communities of Algonquin, Haliburton and Muskoka. Her paintings reflect a deep, lived familiarity with the land; she works outdoors whenever possible, often completing pieces in a single session as she races the shifting light.

Working primarily in oil, Elizabeth brings an energetic, expressive touch to her scenes. Her brushwork is loose and confident, and her colours carry the crisp clarity of cottage country’s seasons. Viewers often note how truthfully her paintings reflect the spirit of the region, from granite shorelines and winter woods to historic camps and village life.

Elizabeth studied fine art at the University of Guelph and continued her training at the Haliburton School of the Arts, along with workshops from respected painters such as Charles Reid, William Schultz, Janice Mason Steeves, and John David Anderson. Her artistic path has included teaching art, running workshops across Muskoka and Haliburton, and serving as artist-in-residence at Arowhon Pines in Algonquin Park.

Her work has appeared in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows in Dorset, Bracebridge, Huntsville and Toronto, and she has earned multiple awards for excellence in oil, acrylic and watercolour painting. She is an active member of Muskoka Arts and Crafts and the Arts Council of Haliburton Highlands.

When she isn’t painting, Elizabeth can be found hiking, canoeing, or tending to her wood-fired pizzeria and gallery in Dorset, where the community and landscape continue to inspire her daily.
